Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. Since its inception in oPt in 1997, UN Women has played an innovative and catalytic role and provided strong and coherent support to Palestinian Authority’s priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Bearing in mind the strong emphasis advocating for gender equality within UN Women, the use of media and advocacy techniques is crucial to voice women’s concerns as well as to promote and protect gender equality and women human’s right. In today’s 24/7 news culture, it is vital to make use of the full potential of media and advocacy to grasp the hearts and minds of women, girls, boys and men towards gender equality and justice and mobilize people into action. Along traditional media, the use of internet and social media has also become an important tool for social change. UN Women oPt website will provide visibility to UN Women as a leading source of knowledge and information in the area of gender equality and women’s rights and support Strategic Partnerships, Advocacy, Civil Society, Communications and Resource Mobilization initiatives and on the performance of UN Women staff members, enabling access to and sharing of information and knowledge generated from within and outside UN Women and, thus helping UN Women achieve its strategic goals.
UN Women is recruiting a Website Content Editor Consultant to set-up and manage a clearly structured, professionally looking, well-designed and well-illustrated UN Women oPt website.
Duties and Responsibilities
Website development and maintenance:
Build, update, enhance and maintain the sitecore website ensuring a well-designed, well-structured, easy to navigate and high quality written and visual content that conforms to web usability and content management standards;
Create and/or update the web pages and sections to reflect strategic plans, priorities, initiatives, knowledge products, flagship initiatives and latest information, to provide continuous access to up to date coordination policy, guidance, best practices, case studies and other reference and interactive on-line information;
Identify, evaluate and recommend new web-based tools and technology and follow-up on installation and implementation to maintain the sitecore website as an effective platform for communication, information and knowledge sharing;
Develop a sustainable self-operating and self-performing website platform for ease of use as well as efficiency.
Present and integrate content into the architecture and structure of the website:
Integrate the content in an effective manner to attract relevant audiences, taking into account and building on the advantages of the dynamic CMS of UN Women website;
Manage new editorial content, as part of editorial packages that include multimedia elements (video, photo, audio) and relevant links;
Manage and edit content for electronic newsletter in a timely manner for coding and final production;
Develop databases (facts and figures, photos, etc.);
Upload content to the website.
Develop and plan content for the UN Women website in close collaboration with the Advocacy and Media officer:
Develop and maintain editorial calendar for the website as part of the overall editorial planning of the Advocacy and Media Unit;
Develop guidelines and provides technical advice on relevant content matter for the UN Women website and on how to write content for the web;
Proactively solicit submissions by UN Women Units;
Regularly update the website content based on consultations with relevant sections;
Provide technical advice, tools and templates to colleagues and other contributors to facilitate the development/posting of website materials and electronic communications and to ensure compliance with and consistency in style, structure, visual attributes and website standards;
Collaborate and/or actively solicit new written and visual content for website from colleagues in UN Women units and other stakeholders.
Edit new content for the UN Women website:
Review, polish, edit and post content to be transferred to the website: presentation, stories, feature articles, presentation of evaluation findings, etc.; ensuring high quality visual and content posting;
Compile and organize documents and multimedia material that will be uploaded on the website and produce blurbs on each document;
Maintain UN Women website ensuring that it informs in a convincing way about relevant news and events highlighting the work of the organization, incl. major meetings, programmatic developments, missions of UN Women staff, UN Women–organized events, etc.;
Copyedit and proofread all web content.
Coordinate translations of web content and electronic newsletter:
Ensure timely English/Arabic translation of website content;
Coordinate upcoming content for translation with the Media and Advocacy Officer.
Timeframe:
The 3-month assignment is expected to start as soon as possible.

Key deliverables:
Initial report on the website architecture with content (English and Arabic) reviewed and articulated in a user-friendly way, consistent and engaging with style; and a list of compiled materials (research, publications, links and multimedia material) to be integrated – 1 month upon contract signature;
Website content fully integrated and published on the website – 2 month upon contract signature;
Guidelines on use of sitecore website and editorial content; and training of UN Women Units on the use of the website provided along with a simple manual on the use of the website CMS – 3 month upon contract signature.

Strong knowledge of web-based publishing technologies, content management systems and software platforms for online knowledge and information sharing;
Strong knowledge and experience in HTML and CSS.
Excellent knowledge of graphical design programs, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Flash, Adobe Fireworks, and video production programs which include Adobe Premier Pro and Sony Vegas Video;
Working knowledge of photo editing software;
Experience in online social networking highly desirable;
Strong knowledge and experience with metadata for the content of the website
Strong knowledge and experience with Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization for website content visibility on search engines and social media networks.
Strong knowledge and experience with responsive website content.
Strong knowledge in troubleshooting minor errors and bugs while publishing content to the website.
Strong knowledge of website authoring, collaboration, and administration
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
Knowledge of issues related to ending violence against women, women’s human rights and/or gender equality;
Knowledge on emerging internet technology and trends;
Excellent English language writing and editing skills;
Excellent communication and advocacy skills.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
Advanced university degree in communication, journalism, technical writing or relevant fields.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of experience in web publishing and editing and editorial planning;
Sound and extensive editorial experience writing and editing for the Web;
Proven experience to craft content for public audiences and outstanding writing and editing skills in English (Arabic is an asset) with a specific understanding of web practices and writing;
Working knowledge of photo editing software; knowledge of online social networking highly desirable;
Experience working with non-profit organizations experience with United Nations is plus.
Language(s) requirements:
Fluency (both oral and written) in English and Arabic is essential.
