Position: Communication Field Officer
Place of employment: ICRC Sub-delegation Gaza
Type of employment: Fulltime open-ended contract as of July 2013
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization
whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other
situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The organization focuses on the protection of
civilians, the welfare of detainees held in Israeli and Palestinian places of detention, and helps the most needy
with direct assistance programmes in the areas of Public Health, Engineering and Economic Security. The ICRC
further supports the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the Magen David Adom (the Israeli National
Society).
Your Job (main tasks)
Assists the Head of Department and the Team in running communication and dissemination activities
Contributes to the implementation and running of communication and dissemination programmes
Maintains contacts with authorities at municipal level, local Red Crescent Branches, population, suppliers,
etc. under minimum supervision
Networking:
Establish and maintain contact with the relevant figures and structures of Gaza civil society, and the
leading Universities and Colleges, as well as media outlets in Gaza in order to foster a better
understanding of ICRC humanitarian work, share ICRC reading of humanitarian situation in Gaza and raise
awareness about the basic principles of IHL.
Contributes to developing and maintaining contacts with the Com dept. of PRCS branches
Communication:
Promotes acceptance of the ICRC, IHL and humanitarian values through communication sessions,
workshops and the integration of IHL into the curricula of Gaza Law and Sharia faculties.
Responds to basic queries and questions from the media (TV, radio, print, web).
Provides support to audio-visual, video and photography production.
Participates in various communication initiatives involving NGOs’, think tanks and human rights actors.
Other Tasks and Reporting:
Contributes to identifying communication strategies and activities for specific target groups for the Sub-
Delegation according to the delegation's priorities and operational needs
Initiates reports on significant trends observed in Gaza related to media and civil society in general and
contributes to various institutional reports
Follow-up of administrative tasks linked to the department’s activities
Your Profile (skills & experience required)
University degree in Communications or in a similar field
2 years’ work experience in a similar field
Good command of written and spoken English as well as good computer skills
Good organisational and analytical skills
Good understanding of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and an understanding of the ICRC mission
and the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement are an advantage
